It’s been a tumultuous start to life in the French capital for new Paris Saint-Germain manager Unai Emery, but despite early-season struggles in Ligue 1, the club’s Champions League ambitions remain on track.

A late 2-1 win over FC Basel on Tuesday saw PSG secure a berth in the knockout stages of the competition, a 90th-minute volley from full-back Thomas Meunier making the difference.

Blaise Matuidi’s back-heel flick just before the break gave PSG the lead but visiting goalkeeper Alphonse Areola was caught off his line when a cross from substitute Luca Zuffi sailed over him in the 76th minute to level the score.

Coach Unai Emery’s last trip to the St. Jakob-Park five months ago was for the Europa League final which his Sevilla side won, and he was celebrating another victory here thanks to Belgian full-back Meunier’s late goal.
