Beaten four times at the Santiago Bernabeu, Manuel Neuer will have plenty of time to absorb what happened during the second leg of the tie between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
After Real Madrid defeated Bayern 4-2 to claim a 6-3 victory on aggregate on Tuesday, the German club announced Neuer suffered a fracture in his left foot and is set to be out for a lengthy spell. The injury was sustained as Cristiano Ronaldo tallied Los Blancos’ third goal of the night in extra time. The ‘keeper will undergo a thorough examination before an appropriate treatment is decided.
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Bayern’s executive board chairman, didn’t hold back his emotion after the game.
“Neuer will miss eight weeks,” Rummenigge told Bild, as translated by ESPN FC’s Mark Lovell. “He sustained the injury during the 3-2 (goal by Ronaldo), which was offside. I am incredibly angry. We were robbed.”
The timeline means the German shot-stopper will miss the rest of the Bundesliga season but be ready to represent Germany at the Confederations Cup in June.
Neuer underwent a minor operation on his left foot in March but recovered in time to partake in Bayern’s tie against Real Madrid.
