Jose Mourinho believes it’s unlikely Manchester United will bring Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford after signing Alexis Sanchez, whom he considers “one of the best attacking players in the world.”
The Portuguese tactician confirmed his new star man would be in the United squad for Friday’s tilt against Yeovil Town in the FA Cup, while Ronaldo rues his team’s humiliating elimination by Leganes in the Copa del Rey. Real Madrid sits fourth in La Liga, 19 points behind leader Barcelona, and Ronaldo’s own form has been suspect throughout the season, but Mourinho isn’t looking to further unsettle the Spanish outfit by pondering another major acquisition.
“Real Madrid is on fire. Results are not good. It is a club I worked at three years and care about the club,” Mourinho said, according to ESPN FC’s Rob Dawson.
“I am the last one to add fire. So water on fire, Cristiano is the type of player everyone wants but only one can have – that is Real Madrid, that’s my feeling.”
Mourinho was apparently in good spirits as he addressed reporters Thursday, having finally acquired Sanchez in a swap deal that saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan join Arsenal. He had no troubling singing early praises for Sanchez, either.
“I think everybody knows the player he is,” Mourinho said, as quoted by BBC Sport. “I think everybody knows what he did at Arsenal. I try not to speak what he did before in Spain and Italy but in the Premier League he has shown the quality he has.
“We got one of the best attacking players in the world and he’s very important for us because we want the best possible players.”
Mourinho added: “Alexis changed from a fantastic club to a giant club and Mkhitaryan changed for a fantastic club.”
