MLS commissioner would welcome Schweinsteiger 'with open arms'
With Bastian Schweinsteiger’s career at Manchester United virtually over, Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber hopes the German midfielder considers a move across the pond.
Schweinsteiger, who has yet to appear in a match under new manager Jose Mourinho, was reportedly written off as an asset when United’s latest financial accounts were revealed last month.
The 34-year-old previously stated that United would be his last European team – paving the way for a possible move to a number of foreign leagues, including MLS.
“Of course we follow Bastian’s situation,” Garber told German outlet kicker, as translated by ESPNFC. “He’s an old acquaintance in the United States, for example through the 2014 World Cup, when he played against the U.S. team. He also played against the MLS All-Stars with Bayern in 2014.
“We would welcome Bastian with open arms. He would be a leader for our many young players.”
FC Dallas could be a possible landing spot, after club president Dan Hunt expressed admiration for Schweinsteiger during an interview with German outlet SPOX in September.
